Photo post! So today I felt sick and after discussing it briefly with my roommate (Katarina) I opted to stay home today instead of going to class because I need to justify this sort of thing before I do it. Messaged one girl in my class to let her know I'd be MIA so it's all good. Feeling better now and I've decided to p--and here's where I rushed to the oven because I totally forgot about putting those mini-pizzas in the oven and I smelled burning, they're still edible

Anyway, back to what I was typing. I decided to post some Venice photos (and by some, I probably mean many) and, as usual, they're unedited.

As soon as you walk out of the train station in Venice this is what you see.

Judith, Nadine and I got there first so we opted to explore the city whilst waiting for the rest of our party. What happened was that Madde, Voltaire and Fallen were going to drive because Voltaire had access to a car. On their way out of Milan, the car decided to die so they had to get their asses back to Milan and take a later train to Venice. When they got to the station they had JUST missed a train and had to wait for the next one. Sucked for them but we got to enjoy a full day in Venice. It was worth waking up really early (shut up, [livejournal.com profile] ohniki, 7 AM is early).

Look! It's an Italian stereotype brought to life!

In Venice I learned something very important about myself: I am in love with Venetian masks (they make me think of the ball scene in Labyrinth, which I love up to the pedocreepy bit). Judith seemed quite amused at how I was going from store to store oo-ing and ah-ing about the masks. When I go back to Venice with the 'rents, I plan to get one for myself (possibly one with really lovely metal work).

I kind of love this guy. His job was to try to get people to go to the opera.

I LOVE CANALS.

Still in the more touristy areas of Venice. We did eventually find the more residential areas.

Madde, her boyfriend Voltaire and Fallen arrive (Madde and bf pictured).

Fallen was probably the most excited to be in Venice, often saying "SHIT WE'RE IN VENICE!" in her adorable Australian accent. She articulated the thoughts racing through my head quite perfectly.

Nadine does not like getting her picture taken but she put on a fake smile for me. At this point we are on the waterbus, headed to the apartment.

Me with Judith. I hate photos of me.

Madde and Voltaire.

I also love old buildings and doors.

We stayed in this pretty fantastic apartment that can fit a small army and came with pretty much everything we needed (it had a freakin' microwave! NO ONE HAS MICROWAVES IN ITALY!) and wasn't crazy expensive! Six people, 20 euro each? Not bad at all! It was also in/near the heart of Venice so we could walk to tons of cool places and get the waterbus easily.

My photos of the interior didn't really come out and I only took three so allow me to briefly describe it: You walk up one flight of stairs and open the door into the living room/kitchen area. The kitchen has a stove and microwave (!!) and kettle as well as everything else you need. There was a decent sized table and couch on the right, two single beds on the left. There are two doors on the left wall, one leading into a bathroom and one the main bedroom (which also has an extra bed hidden in the closet). Off that, there is a tiny closet like room with a bed, lamp, window and chair (I stayed in this room). It's all very comfortable and kind of awesome. We didn't really spend much time in the apartment but when we did we were all sitting around the kitchen table and the couch, drinking wine and pretty much goofing off. Conversations ranged from innocent things to awful sex acts that no one should ever know about. Because we're mature.

Canal right near apartment.

We made friends! And by friends I mean they posed while we took photos of them and then they took photos of us taking photos of them...how meta!

Photobucket

Gondolas! We, sadly, did not get a chance to go on a gondola ride. They're expensive and the guy who offered us a deal disappeared before we could return with everyone in tow and take him up on said offer. Next time!

HOLY SHIT I WAS IN VENICE!

It is VERY easy to get lost in Venice. We got turned around quite a bit when trying to get to the Hard Rock Cafe so Nadine could pick up a shirt. Turned out we were literally RIGHT next to it but had taken a wrong turn. The funny thing was we didn't notice we were right there until we'd walked around for maybe a hour.

That night, we ended up at this small restaurant on a canal. Sadly we didn't get a seat outside but we were serenaded with this guy playing the accordion. It made me think of the line from Clone High "Olive Garden: It's like eating in the kitchen of a delightful Italian stereotype" (feel free to correct my quote if I got it wrong, pretty sure I got the gist of it) except I am IN Italy so is it still a stereotype??

LOVE the little canal/alleys off the main waterway. Being in Venice made me wish I had my own boat so I could just explore that way.

On the waterbus, heading to the station to drop our shit off before continuing our exploration of the city.

Main square that I cannot remember the name of at the moment (San Marco?).

The End.

Pretty much, I love Venice. There were times when it smelled a bit but I don't care because I loved it anyway. I've decided to go back with my parents when they come to Italy. I was going to split from the family vacation and get to my own travels...not so much anymore. I will but two days later than originally planned. So yeah.

Tomorrow I head to Israel for Pesach. My roommate Annette and I may head over to the airport together since she also is going somewhere for the holidays. I plan to meet up with the Carols (and hopefully check out the nightlife in Tel Aviv with Lauren) and maybe even see Liora, one of Mum's friends (they've been friends FOREVER). I want to see Jerusalem and pick up some more Israeli chocolate spread (that shit is GOOD). Maybe get some other foods I can't find in Italy.

Tonight I'm headed to Fallen's for a very un-Passover-y dinner. As much as I like Freida and her family (the Chabad peeps in Italy) I still don't feel very comfortable in an Orthodox environment. I will, however, join them for Shabbat dinner again sometime soon.

Side note: I hate my neighbor's ridiculously loud alarm clock. Stop waking me up before I have to get up! And stop putting it on snooze, you douche.

Gawd, it sounds like you had so much fun! :D I'm glad ya did.
When you come back, if you still want a gondola ride, be REALLY pushy. How much did the guy offer as a "deal"? The gondola drivers know it's not worth as much as they're charging but they're just hoping tourists will be pushovers like me and my family were XD

As for wanting your own boat, I know the feeling. But after seeing how complicatedly the gondoliers maneuvered their boats I wasn't sure anymore XD

The masks are so expensive but they're so worth it if you have money with you :O
