If I had to give today a grade it would be a B+. Most of it was awesome except for that small part which knocks it down a letter grade that I'm not going to talk about since it was not a fun experience and the only reason I'm still sane is that Roo was there to literally hold my hand. Despite that one part, today rocked.
I went to the JCC to drop off food at the Mitzvah Pantry for my mother and decided to try to get into my elementary school (it's connected to the JCC). When I pushed the buzzer no one answered so I figured that I wouldn't get in and went back to the car. As I was pulling out of my spot I saw Wendy. Now, when I went there Wendy was our gym teacher. Now she is the principal and a damn good one at that. I stopped and talked to her for a bit and asked if I could check out the school. Obviously, she said yes. I went in and waited in the office until they confirmed that I had permission and then made my way to the library where I took a few pictures (it's a beatiful library...used to be a chapel but it's a Jewish school so they've changed it around a lot in the last few years, much of what I used to love about it has been painted over because it was very "churchy"). On my way out I decided to go see if my old fifth grade teacher was still there. I asked around and found out she was.
Now, Mrs. Fingerhood is that teacher you dread getting. You see her in the hallways and shrink back in fear because she just seems so strict and scary. In reality, however, she is awesome. She teaches interesting subjects and you get some great projects. I remember loving and hating her class at the time but now most of the memories are fond ones. I found her class and asked one of the students outside if she was doing something really important. Luckily for me she was just handing stuff out so I went in and said hello. She was very excited and asked me the normal stuff "Where are you going to school", "what's your major", etc. She also joked that I am evidence that her students will, in fact, survive fifth grade. I told them that Mrs. Fingerhood will become one of their favorite teachers and that if they're really good, maybe she'll give them cookies. I answered some questions that were mostly about who my other teachers were and if I knew so and so. One of the kids in the class was the little brother of a girl I was friends with years ago. I used to play with him when he was a baby. He threw up on one of my friends...when I told him this he said "Yes!!" enthusiastically. Apparently vomit is still funny to little boys. It was a brief visit since I had to meet some friends for lunch but still pretty awesome. I think I'll stop by again another day. Maybe see other teachers, too.
I was kind of late when meeting up at Wendy's to chill with my friends but so was everyone else so it was okay. Unfortunately, I ruined the surprise that one of my friends was coming but I didn't know it was a surprise so it's sort of okay. We had a nice lunch that was reminicent of last year on G days and then went to Louise's house to hang for a bit. I ended up driving Roo back to school and getting a brief tour that ended up with me taking him and Laura (we picked her up in the cafeteria and convinced her to come with us) back to Louise's area so they could chill while I went home for a quick family dinner before returning to Louise's for a continuation of our previous hang out.
It was nice just doing what we used to before college. We kind of just pick up where we left off but with a variety of stories. It's just really nice. That's all I can think of to describe the feeling...maybe comforting. Yeah, comforting. It's comforting to know that no matter where I go I will have these friends at home who I can reconnect to when I get back. I hope it stays that way forever. It's not home without them.
