Nerdiness

Possible Spoilers for Silence in the Library. What am I saying? Definite spoilers for Silence in the Library )

Went to NJ to see Amanda yesterday. We went to see Miss Gay NJ 2008 and the person we were rooting for ended up winning! YAY! He totally worked the dress during the evening gown section and was the most original when it came to talents. It was a LONG show but entertaining. The theatre was gorgeous. Sadly, I don't think they had the staff who work at the theatre regularly there because whomever was on lighting really didn't understand that there's a reason there are lights pointing at the stage. When people moved towards the audience on the stage, they stepped into shadows. They really needed spotlights on and better sound equipment. Maybe next year. But those are my pet peeves after doing high school theatre.

It was very nice to hang out with Amanda. We went to a very nice Italian place for dinner before the show and then her mom's friend drove us around Asbury Park and told us about how it used to be and what significant buildings were. He also took us into a really cute town that had these beautiful Victorian houses. I really should have brought my camera along. :-( Anyway, next time you should come to me. We'll do South Street and maybe even go into Amish country?

Starting Italian tomorrow. So my schedule as of now is class from 10:40 AM to 12:15 PM at UPenn Monday through Thursday, Italian 6:00 PM to 8:15 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays and work at the cricket club Tuesdays and Thursdays and one day a weekend from about 5 PM to 9/9:30 PM. Here's hoping it isn't too much.

Apparently we're all going to hell

Last night was awesome!! The whole family (plus Dov, who may as well be family) went to see Eddie Izzard at the Academy of Music. We had fabulous seats (unlike the seats Dad and I had for Sexie, which were crap...but also very last minute). Eddie was not in heals or a dress but a very nice coat with tails and some very flattering jeans. One of the girls yelled out that she missed the heals and he told her to go buy some. He can wear whatever he wants, damnit! And while still a card-carrying transvestite, he is currently undercover.

His act was mainly about religion and why he rejects the idea of God. If God exists, he's either not paying attention or is making all of these awful things happen and we may as well tell him to fuck off. There were some geography jokes that went over the audience's head. He only brought up 'The Riches' once, when going on about iTunes and stuff related to it, somehow tying that into Noah's Arc. It's kind of amazing the way that man can bring it back around so easily. Anyway, the show was amusing and made me laugh. His last bit was about coveting. Apparently we are all going to hell for wanting...bit weird considering that's how our economy survives (consumerism). Mum and I think his best act may be 'Dress to Kill' but it's possible that it is our favorite because it's the first one we saw (on the TV, that is). Once the show ended, Jeff, Bri and I were off to do one last thing...

The three of us headed over to Manayunk. My family is a family of nerds. Jeff, among other things, is a comic book nerd. Me, well, he tells me what happened in the comics and I remember it or wiki it and sometimes read comics but he's definitely the one we go to with Marvel questions. Bri and I remember watching the cartoons. Anyway, the three of us ran to the theatre because the movie was on at 10:30 PM (or previews started then) and we got there a minute before it started. What is the movie we were so eager to see? One I've already seen once and Jeff had seen twice. That's right: Iron Man! It is f-ing FANTASTIC!!! Bri hadn't seen it considering he just got back from being way for five months and traveling around Southeast Asia. We kept him away from home a little longer but it was so worth it. This is one of those movies were the more you watch it, the more you pick up on little things they put in there (like the rings, there are ten of 'em, you know. We've seen two). Oh, so good! Marvel, you have done a fabulous job with your first in-house movie. Keep it up.

Eventually we got back home and Jeff and I exchanged some files and then it was bed time. I've been having weird dreams. One where my teacher gave me incompletes despite seeing my final work and most recently, one where I was at work but not in the uniform, which was odd. I need to contact Graham about working at the cricket club again but I need to know if I have an internship first. This is going to be one busy summer.

IRON MAN IS FUCKING AMAZING!!!!!! Robert Downey Jr (I got it right this time, Nicole!) IS Tony Stark. So much love for that movie! Gotta see it again. Jeffy, you, Bri and I NEED to go together. It will rock! Also, do you have Iron Man by Black Sabbath? I don't and can't find it to download. Please upload to mediafire? I'll love you forever!

Free Comic Book Day tomorrow. I'm going whenever I wake up and meeting up with some friends who are going early to sate their inner otaku. Now that exams are over and move out is imminent, we're stealing some chill time in Manhattan before we head back to our homes. So not looking forward to move out.

Fun SA Fact of the Day...sort of

So the SA post is taking its sweet time being written. Mostly because I can't remember what happened in any particular order and am trying to sort it all out. In the mean time, classes have started and I'm back to work.

Fun SA Fact of the Day:
South Africa LOVES the movie Cocktail. Of course, I'm basing this off having seen it playing on their movie channel twice during the vacation. But honestly. Cocktail? The best part about that movie is Doug. And if you've seen it you know how that turns out.

Another Fun Fact of the Day:
I get a student discount at Forbidden Planet. I'm not sure if that goes for all college students or just those who go Pratt.

I geeked out with two random guys in the Doctor Who toy section of FP. It was awesome. One thing that I found odd...the Slitheen set for DW has Ten in it and not Nine. Seems a bit strange since Slitheen were a first season thing.

Off to sort of kind of do homework.

I'm currently doing homework while watching Spice World. And you remember the random pregnant friend that have in the movie? Yeah, that's Tosh. I knew I'd seen her before! I kind of love this movie. It's so utterly camp.

Well...back to work.

Tomorrow they're filming the FX show "Damages" just outside of Pratt. Like you walk out the gate and there it is. So Laura and I are planning on waking up early to go check it out. Here's hoping that we get to meet Rose Byrne or Glenn Close! Probably not going to happen but a girl can dream.

Today Laura and I got stopped by a random guy who told us a very sad story. It was either true or he's just a really good actor. Apparently he just moved from LA, works for NBC, his mother had a stroke when driving and he needed to get it towed but was short by $12 and the cop who came when they called 911 about his mom called him the n-word and his wife was at work so he was trying to get his mother into the hospital and finally succeeded but the towing people wouldn't move the damn car 'cause he just didn't have that $12. We ended up giving him $7. He had told us where he lived and said he'd pay us back. He said he'd leave the money with the doorman but we declined, saying it was okay. We pretty much didn't want to give him our names. So I'm not sure if I was just played but if I was he was a damn fine actor.

So I have to design a font for next Wednesday. That's not nearly as fun as it sounds. Seriously. I also need to do my Vis Comm, Illustration, and, well, everything for next week. I really should start on that...

Time to design my silk screen thinger.

ETA: So this-
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
is my design.

I'm going to do a white outline (suggested to me by Laura) and possibly do a white/yellow glowy thing around the TARDIS to show it's awesome. Kinda like a star behind it? I can't explain it. I want to put The Angels have the Phonebox on it but I may just do that later with iron on lettering. This is my first silk screen EVER so I don't want to get overly complicated...which I pretty much am already considering how intricate the outline will be. Here's hoping I have the right stuff for class tomorrow!

ETA2: The perspective is slightly off and the windows look wrongish. Whatever, it looks cool anyway.

Saw HP5 with Cara and her mummy after work and had dinner after, then infiltrated one of the elementary school's playgrounds for funsies. Twas a nice night. Unfortunately, it means I have again missed my Gramma's daily call whilst my parents are away and have to call her tomorrow or fear her wrath.

Possible spoilers but not really since you've probably read the book and whatnot )

For SBMBers, new and old, in case you don't frequent the boards, I want to put together an HP themed BW for the 21st (or a day or two after) but need stuff from you. Send pictures of you in costume, fanfic, stories that actually have nothing to do with HP, whatever. Just send me stuff pleasethanks! I'll get the other BW out soon. It was supposed to be ready for Wednesday but life got in the way of me getting it all put together. Sorry! The best way to motivate me is through feedback and submissions. And chocolate. And pretty boys. And ponies (or unicorns, I'm not too picky). So motivate me!

Frankenstein's Monster's a freakin' wuss

Before the possible flames start rolling in, allow me to explain the title. In my English class we are reading Frankenstein and I, no matter how hard I try, just cannot get into the book. It's boring. It's boring and as Nicole says, "You can tell it's written by a woman". Now before flames about me insulting women and feminism start I want to put it out there that I am a woman and totally for feminism. That doesn't mean I can't make fun of myself or my gender/sex. So if you're offended by my comments you should probably stop reading now.

Firstly I'm gonna give Mary Shelley props for coming up with a creative plot and characters that are still being reinvented today. She's a cool lady and pretty talented. Except I can't stand her writing. Maybe it's the first person (I've never been a fan...but that doesn't usually keep me from enjoying books that use it). Or maybe it's the whole "show don't tell" rule that has been hammered into my brain from creative writing class. Shelley just keeps on telling me. And once in a while there's bad weather. Then there's good weather. And I don't care because it's fucking boring. It's like she's trying to use a Wuthering Heights-type weather metaphor and just missing. Probably due to her EXPLAINING EVERY LITTLE EMOTION! As you can see by the caps lock, I really hate the explanationions.

Which brings me to the "you can tell it's written by a woman" statement. All that emotion! Frankenstein and his Creation analyze their feelings every two seconds! Then they won't shut up about it for twenty pages! Gah! Why, Mary Shelley? Why? Do you seriously need to tell me everything they feel? No, you don't. And we go back to the "show don't tell" rule. If Frankenstein has an emotional/mental breakdown I can guess that it's because he has all this inner turmoil about creating the monster. If the monster kills a little boy after hearing the name "Frankenstein," I can deduce that it's because he hates his creator and wants revenge on him. So yeah, stop telling me. It's like the book is talking down to me. I hate that. But back to the emotions. There are so many! Maybe it's just because guys hide it but they don't seem to analyze their feelings all that much. They just feel them and vaguely know why. Girls don't even analyze them that much. Seriously. It's overkill. *really wants to make a "go back in the kitchen and make me a sandwhich" joke here but thinks it's out of place...insert one where you think it appropriate*

Now let's talk Monster. Oh, the Monster. He's even more of a stereotypical woman than Frankenstein. He's all "I'm feeling sad. EMO EMO EMO ANGST ANGST ANGST! NO ONE WILL EVER LOVE ME! I'm so ugly!! I WILL NEVER FIT IN, OMG! :C" Oh the angst. While reading his story I was just waiting for the passage where he attempts to commit suicide and then blog about said attempt (which has failed) and wait for the comments to pour in. Now that would be funny- the Monster's blog. Someone should totally start that up. If it hasn't been done yet I want credit fo thinking it up. Oh, I can see it now...

Day 1: ARGHAH!
Day 2: Sadness.
Day 3: Ah! Angry mob!
Day 4: Happy. See pretty cottage.
Day 5: All alone. No one loves me. Sad.
Day 6: Ate berries. Learned to speak.
ETC.

Oh Monster. Why are you so wussy? Yeah, he kills things but only to hurt Frankenstein. In today's world he'd probably post a mean comment on Frankenstein's facebook for all to see. Why Frankenstein would friend him, I don't know, but I can totally see it happening. Maybe I should stop thinking of this in terms of LJ and Facebook. Anyway, the Monster just wants love. Fair enough. But he's just so whiney about it! If he didn't keep on about the "I want LOVE! I just want to be ACCEPTED by SOMEBODY! Woe is me!" thing I might be able to sympathise with him. But NO. He overexplains (or shall I say, Shelley does) the why. I realized as soon as I opened the book that the Monster wanted love. I no longer care. He should just go marry his creator. Then they'd both be miserable together instead of alone. Misery loves company, you know. And now I'm overexplaining my dislike for the book so let's just stop.

In conclusion, I don't want to finish reading it but I have an essay to write on it and don't think Sparknotes will give me enough info.

Superman and Romance Novels. Best Mix Ever.

There's currently an unfinished drawing on my floor that is being ignored as I write this. I can't help it. I found this:
Superman's a Cocky Bastard

To be truthful, I rediscovered it when showing [livejournal.com profile] ohniki my old photobuckets that had some old artwork on them. Only after going on the Smart Bitch blog and seeing the link to Superdickery did I actually remember that I'd found it.

Recently (read: sometime during first semester) [livejournal.com profile] ohniki introduced me to Superdickery.com where there is proof of Superman's asshatness but apparently I'd decided a while ago that he was, in fact, a dick. I'm sure that there's some SBMB thread that urged me to make this crappy drawing of why Superman is such an ass but I can't remember why. All I know is that I found it quite amusing.

But why, you're possibly wondering (but probably not but I'm gonna tell you anyway...it's called procrastinating), was I reading a blog about romance novels? Well, because I, Adri, am a romance novel junkie. I blame Angela. She's my dealer, so to speak. Sometime during the past two years she lent me a book about a highlander-hunk-with-a-raging-libido falling for the gorgeous-red-headed-virgin-who-doesn't-think-she-is-beautiful-but-apparently-is-a-sex-kitten. And god, was the story hilarious! Too bad I can't remember the title.
You always remember the first...well, sort of )

And now I'm wondering, why the hell I wrote all that out. Oh yeah, time wasting. Shall I continue? Well, Nicole isn't here yet to finish Drawing so I may as well.

So, just out of curiosity, do you like the random reviews that are somewhat related to my real life but are more for your amusement (and mine)? If not, I can stop. They're just fun to write and I hope they're fun to read. Just a little something to distract you from the boredom and evilness of constant work. That is why we have LJ, aferall. :-)

ETA: Tell me what your first romance novel was and feel free to post the cover. Half of what makes romance novels awesome is due to the abundance of mantitty on the cover. So, please share.

And there goes my romanticized idea of that...

On Tuesday (sometime around then, anyway) my dad brought home an HDTV. It's huge. Well, huge by my standards. It also has to be propped up with some books to make it more stable since the stand doesn't fit on our entertainment center completely. But that's not the point.

We don't have cable but local stations broadcast on multiple frequencies with HDTV. So now we have 6 and 6-2, 10 and 10-2, etc. There are like twenty million frequencies for channel 48, which is the Jesus channel. I now have maybe six Jesus-centric channels. It's quite amusing. Maybe I can catch Kirk Cameron being adorable and talking about God someday. He's got very soulful eyes. They distract me momentarily so I watch his show for a little longer...then he opens his mouth and I realize he's being preachy so I keep flipping.

So just now I was watching our new TV (still am) on the music video channel called "The Tube". Right now it's playing 'Linger' by The Cranberries. Very artsy music video. But I want to talk about another video. A video that has ruined my view of the band. It's not because it's a bad video per se. I mean, it's not very good. It reminds me of the split screen assignment we had to do for 4D. Oh, side note- the lead signer for INXS is very pretty. I thought he was a chick. Oooo, London! Back to the main topic now. The movie itself is kind of dull and the multiple screens don't do much for it. But that's not why I'm writing this.

I'm not a huge Gin Blossoms fan. In fact, I only enjoy listening to like two of their songs and very rarely. But 'Hey Jealousy' came on and I was excited to finally see what their music video looked like. Then came the disappointment. Then came the realization that the lead singer is not attractive. This generalization that all men with good or pleasant voices are attractive is not true, obviously, but I was just hoping. Maybe it was his haircut that I didn't like. It was like a mullet minus the "business in the front". Yeah...not a good look. Not even in the early 90s. Now whenever I hear that song I'll see the bad video and hair. At least, I will for a while. Then I'll get over it. I mostly have by now, anyway. Wanna know why? Because Prince is freakin' awesome!!!!!!!!!!

Prince, I love you. I love that you have an adorable little kid in your music video. I love your kickassness. I love the tap dancers. You are just awesome!

Man, I love this channel. It's not like the crappy MTVu they show in our cafeteria at school. Unlike there, everytime I turn around Jared Leto is not behind me (which is creepy Caitlin, no matter how much you love him). Good times.

Speaking of school...maybe I should actually do my homework today. Blargle. I dun wanna.

Peter Pan likes porn....a lot.

Last night Cara and I were discussing Jeremy Sumpter (among other things but that's irrelevent) and how it was okay to perv over him as Peter Pan 'cause he is pretty much the same age as us. During this conversation, Sully told us about the Lifetime movie he was in about a kid (J Sumpt) getting addicted to porn. Eager to see J Sumpt in a part that didn't involve him wearing leaves and you know older, than 12, we looked for the movie only to find it in fifty million parts (read: twelve). Because we are awesome, we decided to sit back and watch the trainwreck that is Lifetime movies.

The movie is called Cyber Seduction: His Story (or something like that) and if you care deeply about not being spoiled for the movie, stop reading now. Fine, I'll be nice and LJ cut my ramblings...
Ramblings/Review/Recap/Awesomeness )
Oh Lifetime, you and your preachy ways. I learned so much from this film. Like the fact that porn can ruin your family or that being Christian is good. I also learned that Peter Pan can play a character that isn't, well, Peter Pan (though I will always refer to him as such, if not J Sumpt). It's funny to think of what Peter Pan's reaction would be to porn considering his reaction to Wendy kissing him innocently. I would not want to be in Neverland if that ever happened. *giggle*

Happy New Year you crazy kids!

As you probably have realized, it's 2007. Crazy, eh? I'd like to think that last year was pretty good but right now I can't be arsed to analyze it in too much detail. One thing that happened last year was graduating and going on to college. That was pretty damn cool. Here's hoping for 2007 to kick major ass!

Got to see "Dreamgirls" today. It was really good! I recommend it, anyway. It was fun and somewhat serious. Good times were had.

I had a great time with [livejournal.com profile] molassesturtle, [livejournal.com profile] uscdreamr and [livejournal.com profile] maverick0324 at Amber's house! We watched "Coupling", created a drinking game for HP GoF but didn't play it and instead played Scategories and some tabloid game that turned into fitting in the phrase "lesbian spank inferno" in the headline in funny ways.

In fact, I'd like to remind you guys that there is a challenge waiting to be fulfilled: Use "lesbian spank inferno" in some way in a fic. Doesn't matter what the pairing is. They can be watching it, making it, in it, whatever. Just write the fic and make it awesome! Please? Points to those of you who know where that quote comes from ('those of you' being the people who weren't at Amber's).

Tomorrow I sleep over the Bayit and then Bri and I are off to Florida to join the parents. They leave tomorrow. It should be fun. I just hope they let me go to Disney World. I've never been and feel that's just not right. Everyone should go at least once, even if it is overrated.

Anyway, happy new year and I hope you all have a wonderful 2007!

Had tons of fun tonight watcing Episode III with Bethany and Laura. There was tons of commentary about Obi Wan and Anakin's secret love affair and the stupid reasons why Anakin turns Darth Vader. How Palpatine came up with that name, we don't know. But we guess it was him thinking on his feet. Our imagined conversations about this went a little something like:
Palpatine: You shall now be called Darth...Elroy.
Anakin: Elroy?
Palpatine: Okay...Poindexter!
Anakin: Uh-uh.
Palpy: Englebert Humperdink?
Anakin: Nope.
Palpy: Francis...Dick...Jeff?
Anakin: No, no and definitely NOT.
Palpy: Darth Vader?
Anakin: Sounds cool.

Oh yeah, we're awesome. And then after watching that we had our Ewan McGregor musicfest (aka listening to the songs Adri has on her computer that are sung by Ewan). Now I'm sitting on the floor in Bethany's dorm and chillin'. Yuppers. We are so cool!

My life has been taken over by camp and bartending. I don't mind it mostly, it's fun, but I would have liked to see Pirates with my friends on Friday instead of taking a class it turns out I've already taken except the teacher I had for it the first time didn't do the second half for us. It was a good thing I went, though, because I learned a lot and met some really nice people. And the class I have tomorrow (wine seminar) is earlier than I thought now so less sleep. And less sleep = unhappy Adri. Garg!

For my lunch break I walked around Old City in search of Becca because I knew she was working. I asked some of the dudes in ye olde time costumes where she was and the third questioned actually was working for the same company as she is and gave me great directions to find her. So I got to hang out with her for the rest of the break and went back when we got out early. I had much fun!

I like walking around the city. It's fun to people watch. The idea of living in a city is just so appealing. There are so many things going on and tons of places to explore. I just wish I got to do it more often. Maybe the days when I miss the 5:40 train (which is bound to happen since it takes over ten minutes to walk from class to the station and class ends at 5:30 usually) I'll have an adventure until the next train comes. Philadelphia is pretty.

I got my first paycheck. It was very exciting. They actually spelled my name right and everything. We also had a party for John 'cause he's going to Italy on Tuesday and won't be back at camp until the last two weeks. No, not that John. The other one. We have two of 'em. And sometimes David is John and John is David. It's all very confusing but amusing if you know what the hell I'm rambling about, which you probably don't and I don't feel like explaining because it makes the confusion less funny for me. And in conclusion, I'm gonna drink my tea in this huge-ass Tinkerbell mug that is bigger than my face. Yeah, it's awesome.

P.S. [livejournal.com profile] eileenthepeach, I finally rented and watched "The Producers" and loved it! A few actors who had small parts in it have actually been in the play on Broadway at one point. Examples: Richard Kind (jury dude) was Max Biallystock when I saw it and Jonathan Freeman (ticket dude) was Roger DuBris (he and Richard were in the show together, actually). Yes, I notice small things. Blame my cousin Antonia. She said Jon would be in it, I just didn't know exactly when so I kept my eyes open. And after watching "Spin City" almost religiously when little it's pretty impossible for me to not notice Richard Kind.

Carter, I got your message. Sorry that I can't go see the movie with you but I'm currently in Canada. The problem with this whole you owe me a movie thing is that the only time you're available is when I'm out of state or out of the country. We should work on that...

Anyway, we arrived in Toronto last night. Today Jeff, Bri and I saw "X3" and are disappointed. There were good parts but we're upset with the overall product. Bah! Will rant later. We're going to see a probably depressing play about Golda Meir tonight. It's a pity because the last time we were here we saw The Blue Man Group, which was awesome. I guess you can't beat that, though. Bah.

Jeff is rewriting X3 as I type this...in his head. He just came up with an idea for a scene where Nightcrawler fights Madrox and said "my kingdom for a piece of paper" so that he may now write out a list of things he wishes he'd seen. Yeah, we're dorks.

Been looking at Jon's IMDB page and found this thread about whether or not he's gay (you may need to be registered on imdb.com to see it). My cousins Antonia and Justine replied to it, saying that he was (after I had posted late at night about how it was no one's business...hence my lack of articulateNess) and have received a few negative responses to the wording of their response. I'm wondering right now if I should step in and back them up or keep laughing at the situation like I am right now. "Bum chum"??? Hahah!

Dominant or recessive traits and the Antichrist

This analysis sparks from a conversation I had second period with [livejournal.com profile] sneeze042, [livejournal.com profile] caitylady88, [livejournal.com profile] reynardelzorro, Bo and Rory. We were discussing the movie The Devil's Advocate, which I have yet to see in its entirety. Now here's your spoiler warning because I'm going to give stuff away that you may not want to know. Of course, the film came out AGES ago so if you, like me, have not seen it, leave. Right now. Seriously, dude. )

Hehe, we're awesome!

Oh yeah. And happy day of chocolate eating or whatever it is you do on this day. I plan on watching "Scrubs" later on. And having Wawa for dinner. Mmmm, hoagie goodness!
